The recent suspension of food business licences by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Mumbai has brought to light some disturbing practices within the city's prestigious clubs. This action, taken after thorough inspections, highlights a range of food safety and hygiene violations that have put patrons at risk. The affected clubs include the Cricket Club of India (CCI), RK Juhu Gymkhana, Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club, Willingdon Sports Club, and the Goregaon Sports Club.
What makes this situation particularly concerning is the extent of the violations found. At the CCI, inspectors uncovered a multitude of issues, including a lack of separate areas for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation, a severe cockroach and fly infestation, water dripping onto stored food, and the presence of mouldy vegetables, overripe mushrooms, and expired food items. The kitchen environment was appalling, with brooms on platforms, heavy grease, dirt, sludge, and stagnant water on food-contact equipment, floors, and drainage channels.
The FDA's findings at other clubs were equally alarming. At Willingdon Sports Club, unhygienic floors, deteriorating walls and ceilings, uncertified food-grade packaging, poorly maintained drains, and inadequate hygiene among food handlers were noted. RK Juhu Gymkhana faced issues with inadequate personal hygiene facilities, improper cleaning of raw materials, crumbling walls and ceilings, and food handlers not adhering to basic hygiene practices.
Aparna Juhu Gymkhana's kitchen was found to be in a dire state, with rusted cooking equipment, inadequate hygiene facilities, food stored in non-food-grade packaging, and a failure to segregate cooked, uncooked, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian food. Flies were also spotted in the kitchen.
The MIG Cricket Club's food facility was operating without a valid FSSAI licence, with an unauthorised entity, M/s Nebula Catering Services, in charge. This led to a cockroach infestation, improper storage of raw and cooked food, a lack of periodic food and water testing, untrained technical staff, and non-maintenance of medical and vaccination records for food handlers. The club had also violated its licence conditions by changing the food establishment's location and updating its management structure without informing the licensing authority.
The FDA's actions have sent a strong message that food safety and hygiene standards will not be tolerated. The suspension of licences and the issuance of stop-business and improvement notices demonstrate a zero-tolerance policy towards violations. This is a necessary step to protect public health and ensure that food establishments adhere to the highest standards.
However, this incident also raises questions about the effectiveness of regulatory bodies in monitoring and enforcing these standards.
